How Do You Get Elephantiasis?
Elephantiasis is transmitted by mosquitoes. An infected mosquito will bite you, transmitting microfilariae into your bloodstream. Here, they will circulate until mature. On the first bite, limbs do not undergo enlargement, only after several bites so your limbs swell. On the first bite, you will however come down with the other symptoms. Click on the button below to see the other symptoms, or continue reading about the causes.
Other causes include having extensive surgical removal of lymph nodes, but this is very unlikely. Visiting countries endemic for this disease means that infected mosquitoes are transmitting the disease a lot. Therefore, if you travel to one of these countries, it's likely that you as well will be bitten by an infected mosquito. It's not a disease that is transmitted by contact with other people, so airways, buses, and other forms of transportation to other countries aren't a way to catch it. The only way to catch it transportation wise, would be if infected mosquitoes were present on the airplane, bus, train, car, etc. as well.
